A love letter
to Providencia.
Rodrigo Blanco has carried a love of photography, art, and history across oceans. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and now based in Boston, Massachusetts, the photographer and artist traveled around the world as a young man, proudly serving as a sailor in the U.S. Navy. One small island still awaited him.
In 2025, he finally arrived on Providence Island, also known as Providencia, in the Colombian Caribbean. The moment he stepped off the plane, he fell in love. After journeys that had taken him so far, this island offered a new place for his heart to linger.
That first visit held sorrow alongside wonder. Rodrigo was captivated by Providencia’s beauty and heartbroken by the damage still visible after Hurricane Iota struck in November 2020. His photographs would carry home the beauty of a place whose wounds had moved him deeply.
Back in Boston, he returned again and again to the many photographs he had taken. Those images became a way of holding the island close. He also remembered something he had hoped to bring home: a souvenir T-shirt that captured Providencia’s beauty and history. He hadn’t found the one he imagined.
So he began creating his own designs, at first simply for himself. In time, he chose to share the collection with others. These designs are his love letter to Providencia: an invitation to take home a little of its beauty, carry its history close, and remember this beloved corner of the Colombian Caribbean.
